Freedom and Bondage

Sep 17, 2013 at 7:37 AM PDT

If you look around, you’ll notice that there are many of us wandering around, looking for that special “something.” That “something” is hard to describe. But it feels real. So real that there are times, when we feel we almost have it, but then something happens and we don’t feel that close to it any more. There are many words for that feeling. Awakening, liberation and enlightenment come to mind almost instantly. We try and find our voice in poetry and books about self-exploration but words alone seem dry and meaningless. We keep searching without getting anywhere. Despite that, we choose to devote our all to this endeavor of connecting with ourselves. This is an endeavor that changes our life forever.

It’s interesting to know how some of us slipped out of the mould and took this alternative view of the world – one that tells us that nothing in our life is permanent. Fresh leaves come out in spring and wither away in autumn. In that same way, people come and go, and of course, we connect and share a lot with them, but nobody stays forever.

Meditation Freedom and BondagePerhaps that’s what freedom is in its simplest and purest form – to let everything in without judgments or attachments. It’s easy to say but extremely difficult to follow and theory alone doesn’t do much. But one thing that starts to soften us inside is meditation. A simple act of sitting with yourself for about 20 minutes every day helps you see the world the way it is and not the way we’ve been taught to look at it. Nothing is seen or experienced in isolation, instead what’s experienced is our collective consciousness – one that involves everything and everyone. The more you sit, the more you connect with that quiet space within and that quiet space is nothing but you. It is you in your purest form, beyond images or forms or words. That’s your source. The more you tap into that source, the easier and more meaningful life becomes because now you make a conscious decision to not let petty issues affect you in an unpleasant way. That conscious decision of not being affected by life’s trials and tribulations is true freedom.

So tomorrow when you wake up, instead of having a worrying thought about where you are heading and what you’re doing, be comforted by the thought that there are many more like you, who are also wandering and looking for this exact same thing that you are. You may not run into them everyday, but as you go along on this path, you will meet many like-minded people to engage and connect with. Feel fortunate that you’re restless and not willing to succumb to the routine and predictability of life. When things seem difficult and confusing, connect to that quiet space within. Sit with yourself and watch your thoughts come and go. Eventually, all that’s left is pure nothingness.
